Rated 5 out of 5 by My original work boots - bought in 1978, I still wear 'em! I bought a pair of these boots - they were called the Irish Setter sport boot way back in 1978. I then worked construction jobs for 3 years, and parks and recreation jobs for 2 years. Wore these boots every day during those times.I learned a valuable lesson at that time -having a good quality work boot is definitely worth every dime you put into it. I have known other construction pros who cheap out on boots - and they have continuous back, leg and foot problems. You will NOT have those kinds of problems with Red Wings!I'm no longer a professional, but have worn this same pair of boots thousands of times on hunting trips, outdoors for hiking, mowing the lawn, home repairs and construction. They have been repaired a few times, but still have the ORIGINAL sole! The price is a bit steep for the non-professional, but as I said earlier, they are worth the price.I am so happy to learn that the 899 is being offered again -and will be placing my order in the next few days.the style is great, and I know that this will be the last pair of boots I'll buy in my lifetime. Rated 4 out of 5 by great boot beware if you buy used This has to be one of the finest work/general purpose lacers made. Notice in the boot pictured above the light tan leather welt that joins the upper to the sole. This is the boot you want. For a few years Red Wing used a harder black plastic (or something) welt here instead and I have seen those pairs pop the stitches and seperate but they are super nice boots and very durable and comfortable. Just watch out for that black welt if you're picking up a pair of used or older stock. October 28, 2014
Rated 5 out of 5 by boots are very durable Have been wearing 899s for years. Have b width feet, very hard to find decent boots. Can get 2 years out of them if I get them resoled. Definitely worth the money. October 17, 2014
Rated 4 out of 5 by Be prepared for the break-in period I bought a pair of these boots six months ago and I'm glad to say they are starting to feel comfortable when worn for an extended period. I wear them for eight to ten hours, five to seven days a week. The first three weeks the heavy seams on the sides made them uncomfortable after a few hours. I am glad to report that after about six weeks and a good pair of insoles, I have eliminated that problem. Based on how these boots have worn, if I keep them clean and oiled, they should last for years. Worth the money and discomfort associated with break-in. October 12, 2014
Rated 5 out of 5 by Best boot ever I went to a Redwing Shoe Store when I was 18 to buy a good pair of work boots, and that was 41 years ago. This model was the one I bought. I had planned on going on an adventure our west working laborer jobs to get by on, so I needed a good pair of work boots. I have bought Redwing since then, but wasn't aware that this model was still around. I will be ordering these soon! I have told this story to people over the years whenever the subject came up of good work boots. I am thrilled that I can get these once again. In my opinion, they are the best and most comfortable I have ever worn, not to mention they look great! Thanks Redwing for bringing this model back. July 28, 2014
Rated 5 out of 5 by TOUGH! I have had a pair of these boots since 1998 and they are STILL in great condition. You cannot go wrong buying them for hunting or work. The sole is indestructible, the leather is very soft and thick. I bought another pair a couple years ago just in case they become obsolete! And......yes-MADE IN THE USA!!! July 25, 2014
Rated 5 out of 5 by The Original Irish Setter - Best Value in an Outdoor Work Boot Red Wing discontinued these boots for decades. Now I've the pleasure to own another pair for the last 3 years hunting, hiking, fishing, gathering firewood, etc. For a handmade working boot there is no better value than these 899's. Snow Seal worked into the stitches and a pair of thin poly socks under some sturdy wool socks and you are ready for everything. One last point, these boots used to be the FAVORITE boot of outdoor working WOMEN hands down! Consider offering women's sizes again. June 30, 2014
