Rated 5 out of 5 by 20+ years with first pair - just bought second about 2 years ago - great boot! Received my first pair of Redwing boots while working for a company in California doing wildlife biology field work. The company purchased them for all of the field people; it was a great "gift" I did not appreciate until 20 years later when I was still using the boots for yard work. The best part is how comfortable and durable they were. I walked transects for the year of field work, logging probably 50+ miles per week, every week. It was in the desert and the boots really took a beating but held up well with just basic care. Then for years, I used them in St. Louis and NJ, where the moisture is significantly higher. Again, no issues. Even the laces held up - same ones for 2 decades. Finally, the uppers simply fell apart so I purchased another pair; these will probably outlast me. December 13, 2015
Rated 2 out of 5 by Six months and still not broken in Loyal Red Wing customer since '98, averaging a pair every year. Had no more thread left on my 1421 so I decided to get these. On the second day of wearing my new boots I knew to better get my old ones resoled because this break in process is gonna take some time. Six months into it and still can't go a full day in them. This is a first for me, I'm use to RW being ready right out the box. I need these boots to make a living and not to wear em to the bar so i can look cool while ordering a PBR. I hope the factory remembers the trades men and women that made their brand legendary and keep us working on our feet (for more then a few hours at a time). December 3, 2015
Rated 5 out of 5 by "Custom made" 30 years ago and still going strong. Way back in February 1985 I went to my local Red Wing dealer to get a pair of "made in America boots". The owner of the shop / salesman actually measured my foot to get a correct size (I have narrow width feet). He asked where I would be using the boot, and then made a recommendation (the original boot had a crepe sole). He told me that it would take a week or so since they were going to be made "custom" to my foot size. The cost back then, $135 (if I remember correctly, and I believe I do).I worked at a farm in those boots until around 1998. At the same time, I worked late afternoon shift for UPS in those boots until I left that job in early summer of 1995. Even as my careers changed throughout the years, those same Red Wing boots were on my feet. They were the boots I used formwork, farming, hunting, lawn maintenance, garage work, and just "kickin' around" boots. They have been resoled 3 times (all Vibram) and the third sole is still going strong. Then it happened...This past summer (2015), the stitching going up the back of the left boots let go. The stitching on the right boot was becoming very loose. But these boots have been with me most of my adult life, I couldn't let them die. This fall (October 2015) I had my brother drop them off at Red Wing Richmond, VA (their Midlothian store). I called down to get an estimate on the repairs of my 30+ year old boots. The lady on the phone was very understanding and helpful, When I asked how much it would cost, she said, "Sir, these boots are the very DNA our Company was built on... We will repair all of the stitching, oil them up real good for you, and get you some new laces". Again, I asked how much it would cost, she replied, "no charge". I was in shock! They were going to repair my 30+ year old boots for free. Now that is customer service and shows you why you should always buy Made in America with American materials.Oh, the repaired boots look as good as they ever have, and feel just like a "custom made" boot should.Buy these boots. You will not be disappointed. December 3, 2015
Rated 5 out of 5 by Possibly the best Red Wing ever! I've been a Red Wing fan for several years and I love the comfort and quality of their footwear. I have been wearing the 1102 style for the last 3 years and they were a great boot. I did have a few minor complaints however so I went to the catalog to find something better. I ran across these 899's and after researching a while decided that I'd spend the money on them. Now it's three months later and I'm happy to report that they are everything I was hoping for and more! The comfort is astounding with a good insole. I'm not sure what others are doing with theirs, but I highly recommend a good orthotic, such as Powerstep Pinnacle. They'll make a good boot a great boot! I have B width feet and ordered accordingly. They aren't as narrow as the 1102's were and that was one of the the only minor complaints I had. I think that I could order a half size smaller and it would solve that dilemma though. The only other issue I have with these is, Why to they put hooks up the calf and then at the top they put another loop. I've been thinking of having my boot shop replace it with a hook. The leather is holding up extremely well and I've been oiling them once a week. If you use some saddle soap and clean them once in a while the leather keeps really nice. I often wear them to town and they look great with a good pair of jeans.I am definitely satisfied and will buy a couple more pair if they ever threaten to discontinue this model. Great looking, comfortable, and durable, replaceable Vibram soles. What more do you need? July 4, 2015
Rated 3 out of 5 by Should be great, poor leather selection PROS: Made in U.S.A., build quality*, sole/tread, looksCONS: My biggest gripe, and reason for the * on build quality is the leather selection. On the left boot, the inside piece of leather that covers ankle is thin and supple, while on the right boot, the leather is very thick and rigid. You can see in the pic I've uploaded that the left boot leather practically slouches, while the right boot is super stiff. Same for the leather that forms the toe box, except opposite in terms of softness.I wish I had noticed this prior to the expiration of the fit guarantee. Unfortunately, I bought these boots during some down time and just didn't notice the few times I wore them around the house during that period. After about 1.5 months of work wear, the difference became quite noticeable and substantial, and now it's like wearing two different boots. I don't know if the right boot will ever be like the left boot - the leather is literally twice as thick on the right boot. Poor quality control for a boot that cost me $300 including tax.I'm a solid size 12 or larger and bought these in 11. The 11 works great for length, but toes are a bit cramped (vertically) and even at 11, there's a lot of foot volume to fill up. They fit me fine, just not true to size, so be aware if ordering these online June 12, 2015
Rated 5 out of 5 by The Standard by Which Others are Judged The 899 is undoubtedly one of, if not THE, most beautiful boot Red Wing produces. It has an elegance that transcends its function, which is the reason I was drawn to it, and ultimately purchased it. The leather, the fit, the rugged sole, and supportive steel shank all meld into a truly iconic whole. This is truly a most have for all Red Wing aficionados! Wear it with jeans, overalls, or chinos...it always compliments the attire. A simply marvelous boot. May 4, 2015
Rated 5 out of 5 by They will climb a cliff I bought the first pair two years ago. It takes several miles to get them broken in but when they are broken these are the most comfortable shoes in your closet. I am a Land Surveyor; I do a lot of forest boundary, steep brushy terrain. A simple boot, no insulation , vibram soles. They have my size 14benny! I just bought a new pair and have worn them for the past two days. They are getting broken in. I put the old pair on this morning, I didn't realize how much softer the leather is, they have really worn to my foot. They are great boots. They aren't water proof but with a good oiling you can splash through a creek and stay mostly dry. April 16, 2015
