Rated 5 out of 5 by The Standard by Which Others are Judged The 899 is undoubtedly one of, if not THE, most beautiful boot Red Wing produces. It has an elegance that transcends its function, which is the reason I was drawn to it, and ultimately purchased it. The leather, the fit, the rugged sole, and supportive steel shank all meld into a truly iconic whole. This is truly a most have for all Red Wing aficionados! Wear it with jeans, overalls, or chinos...it always compliments the attire. A simply marvelous boot. May 4, 2015
Rated 5 out of 5 by They will climb a cliff I bought the first pair two years ago. It takes several miles to get them broken in but when they are broken these are the most comfortable shoes in your closet. I am a Land Surveyor; I do a lot of forest boundary, steep brushy terrain. A simple boot, no insulation , vibram soles. They have my size 14benny! I just bought a new pair and have worn them for the past two days. They are getting broken in. I put the old pair on this morning, I didn't realize how much softer the leather is, they have really worn to my foot. They are great boots. They aren't water proof but with a good oiling you can splash through a creek and stay mostly dry. April 16, 2015

Rated 5 out of 5 Don't ever discontinue! Awesome classic boot! I hate all the newer designs, cheap looking and made.Do not ever get rid of this model. February 2, 2015
Rated 5 out of 5 by One fine boot! I have had mine for 15 years. I still pick them up just to look at them and feel the leather. The leather is like the kind they make baseball gloves out of. Thick and tough! I have worn mine in snow, Ice and doing tree work and they perform very well. They are a heavy boot (2.5 lb per ft) so I would not buy them for long distance hiking. Rated 5 out of 5 by My original work boots - bought in 1978, I still wear 'em! I bought a pair of these boots - they were called the Irish Setter sport boot way back in 1978. I then worked construction jobs for 3 years, and parks and recreation jobs for 2 years. Wore these boots every day during those times.I learned a valuable lesson at that time -having a good quality work boot is definitely worth every dime you put into it. I have known other construction pros who cheap out on boots - and they have continuous back, leg and foot problems. You will NOT have those kinds of problems with Red Wings!I'm no longer a professional, but have worn this same pair of boots thousands of times on hunting trips, outdoors for hiking, mowing the lawn, home repairs and construction. They have been repaired a few times, but still have the ORIGINAL sole! The price is a bit steep for the non-professional, but as I said earlier, they are worth the price.I am so happy to learn that the 899 is being offered again -and will be placing my order in the next few days.the style is great, and I know that this will be the last pair of boots I'll buy in my lifetime. Rated 4 out of 5 by great boot beware if you buy used This has to be one of the finest work/general purpose lacers made. Notice in the boot pictured above the light tan leather welt that joins the upper to the sole. This is the boot you want. For a few years Red Wing used a harder black plastic (or something) welt here instead and I have seen those pairs pop the stitches and seperate but they are super nice boots and very durable and comfortable. Just watch out for that black welt if you're picking up a pair of used or older stock. October 28, 2014
